5 Bad Painting Choices You Will Come to Regret

Painting a room can be so healing and refreshing. There is nothing that screams makeover like a fresh coat on an old wall.

Painting your walls in your home can be very exciting, especially if you are anxious to see the end product.

But if you are going to do the job, do the job right! There are many mistakes that first-time homeowners make because they are unsure of how to approach a painting project. There is a lot to consider when repainting your home and you don't want to end up regretting your decision.

Here are a few ways that you can save yourself some heartache:

1) Get tiny samples

You know those small cards that they have on display at the hardware shops? They aren't there to look beautiful; they are there to help you.

Use those cards to get samples that you can take home and try out before you buy the color.

It is important that you paint large blocks of each sample on the wall so that you can decide which color or shade will go best with the look of the room.

Don't rush the testing process. Just let it be.

2) Forgetting about the function of the room

Never forget what the room is there for: the psychology of colors has a few rules that can alter your mood, believe it or not.

Red, for example, has been shown to raise the heart rate. This color will work well in an entertainment area, but not in a bedroom. Calming colors like navy blue or green will work better for where you want to relax. Experts have also noted that yellow and brown are not great for bathrooms.

They send out the wrong message. Rather choose white - it portrays a clean image.

3) Choosing a boring palette

Beige on beige with a beige trim? Yawn.

It's boring just thinking about that!

Some homeowners tend to stick to dull colors so that they never have to repaint, but these colors reflect your personality.

Would you rather repaint every now and then than stare into colorless walls every day? Using the same color over and over will also create a décor scheme that lacks depth.

It is important to develop a contemporary palette. Heck, did you know that it has become very trendy to mix neutrals like grey, warm beige, and soft colors!?

4) Not comparing the finishes

Comparison is not always the thief of all joy - it might just help you choose the perfect color for your room.

The finish that you choose should correlate with the room's purpose. Many homeowners are apprehensive to choose a semi-gloss, but it is more durable than matte and more moisture resistant, which is perfect for bathrooms.

However, flat and matte are easier to touch up, so they work perfectly in areas where there is a lot of traffic. Also, consider the room's undertones: you can't match a pink color when there are yellow countertops present.

5) Picking the wrong shade of white

Yes, there is more than one shade, if you didn't know.

Unfortunately, you can't just pick white and be on your way. You need to know exactly what you want when you head to the store, otherwise the choices might just overwhelm you.

Some whites are cool while others are warm, and some might be more neutral than others. It will all then depend on the undertones of the room.

Another common mistake that people make is using too much white. It can make a room look gray and drab. Rather choose a white with a slight pink or yellow tint.
