Where did the name "Silver Lakes" come from

According to an article that appeared in August 2001 edition of the local community magazine, Intra Muros, the name "Silver Lakes" was decided upon because it had local relevance as "Silver" referred to an old silver mine situated to the north of the Estate near Mamelodi and the "Lakes" portion of the name referred to pools formed by the river that ran through the Estate. In later years the lakes have become a prominent feature of the Estate.

Despite name variations over the years, the core words "Silver Lakes" have remained constant.

Evolution of the name

In 1992 the developer, Anglo American Property Services named the Estate - Silver Lakes Country Club Estate, later it became known as Silver Lakes Country Club Residential Estate and subsequently Silver Lakes Residential Estate.

Refinement of the name

Since the focal feature of the development was the 18-hole championship golf course consequently, under the Chairmanship of Mr Pieter Page, it was agreed to amend the name to Silver Lakes Golf Estate.

The addition of the nature reserve

After the approval from home owners at a special meeting in 2001, the footprint of Silver Lakes Golf Estate was expanded to include a 77-hectare nature reserve and approximately 180 residential stands. This addition to the original Estate not only added the joy of wildlife on the doorstep but also picnic places, viewing spots for bird watching, nature trails as well as expanded cycling, jogging and fishing areas.

New name registered - Silver Lakes Golf and Wildlife Estate

In 2017 after due consideration the Board of Directors took the decision to change the name of the Estate to Silver Lakes Golf and Wildlife Estate to accurately reflect both the golf and wildlife aspects of the Estate. This name was registered as a trade mark with all the necessary safeguards that accompany such application.

What is in a name - a name is important for identification and connection purposes and represents linkage to the past but also to the future. The name "Silver Lakes" has become an iconic name which reflects the unity and prestige of a community and as such the area surrounding the Estate has now also become known as "Silver Lakes".
